Limbo was the third-highest selling game on the Xbox Live Arcade service in 2010, generating around $7.5 million in revenue. The game has been listed among the greatest games of all time. A common point of criticism from reviewers was that the high cost of the game relative to its short length might deter players from purchasing the title, but some reviews proposed that Limbo had an ideal length. Limbo received critical acclaim, but its minimal story polarised critics some critics found the open-ended work to have deeper meaning that tied well with the game's mechanics, while others believed the lack of significant plot and abrupt ending detracted from the game. Based on its aesthetics, reviewers classified Limbo as an example of video games as an art form. Journalists praised the dark presentation, describing the work as comparable to film noir and German Expressionism. The game is presented in black-and-white tones, using lighting, film grain effects and minimal ambient sounds to create an eerie atmosphere often associated with the horror genre. The timeline all but confirms Playdead has likely made dramatic changes over the course of its game's development, maybe even changing its engine outright multiple times. There was no explicit mention of Playdead's previously-confirmed project, however. Limbo was built on a custom engine and Inside was made using Unity. There was always the possibility of Playdead using Unreal Engine 4, given the studio's lack of experience with the platform. Epic Games confirmed it would provide the full development costs of the new game as well as Unreal Engine development support. In 2020, Playdead announced a publishing partnership with Epic Games. Unreal Engine 5's usage for the new game is by no means a surprise. The job listing references an expectation for the applicant to "meet technical performance requirements in Unreal Engine 5." While the job listing doesn't explicitly state it's for Playdead's known project, which doesn't have an announced name, it does reference a "large, third-person, open-world" game. The job listing in question is for an Experienced Landscape Artist on Playdead's development team. A new Playdead job listing has added a new detail, indicating that the new game is built on Unreal Engine 5. Little is known about Playdead's next project other than it's a third-person game in a 3D world. Limbo offered a dark story of a lost boy searching for his sister, while Inside delivered a stranger tale of a boy searching for something else entirely. Playdead has earned a position as one of the gaming industry's most exciting indie game developers, with its first two games both being critically acclaimed award winners. ![]()
